Event Details

Foam Catfish

Description:

Whether it's making a quick 3-D mock-up, a pattern for casting in fiberglass, a lightweight prop or a monumental sculpture, foam is the perfect material.  Learn how flexible and rigid foams can be patterned, fabricated, coated and molded.  Learn about suppliers, unusual materials and obscure foam facts and techniques.

The class has been revised somewhat from its first run at the Asylum to increase hands-on experience for each technique discussed. Each class will focus on a particular set of foam sculpting techniques. Students will practice each technique in class, and will go home with their practice materials.

Class Goals:

Students will learn about the arcane world of foam props and sculpture, including how to choose the proper foam, how to shape it, frame it, detail it, coat it and finish it.

Prerequisites:

None.

Materials:

There will be a $75 materials fee for practice materials, payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Instructor Biography:

Bob Field built his first ham-on-rye costume in 1985 and the following year opened Foam Props. He's done 60' dragons and 25,000 over-sized Berry Berry Kix. He's sent 15' goldfish to Osaka, Japan and a 18' Nike sneaker to the Olympics. 25 years later, after finishing a 15' tall high heel shoe for MasterCard, he's wondering if anyone else out there would like to make something weird out of foam?
